On a serious note, recently there have been many families in my community battling illness and tragic loss. My heart felt love and positive energy goes out to all of you. I am blown away by the community support and strength that I have seen and am privileged to be surrounded by.

valentines engagement session winner

Here is the letter I chose to win the engagement session. Thanks to everyone who sent in their stories of love and romance for me to read. It was very tough to choose, but there was something so sure, definite and lovely about this letter. Ashley, I love how you write, and I look forward to the chance to capture some of what you and Alex have in our session together.
Happy Valentines Day!!

Just a normal day for me, sitting in the cafeteria at high school, I sat dateless for prom, contemplating weather to even go or not. One of my best friends, Avori started suggesting some of her boyfriend’s friends. Listening to her explain each of the guys to me, I sat thinking how pathetic it was. I listened to her briefly explain one of the guys named Alex. From the very few details she gave me, he sounded really interesting. Before I knew it I was set to meet him on a blind date that weekend. To make the situation less awkward Avori suggested her and her boyfriend come along as a double date. I was so nervous; I pulled over 3 times on the way there, contemplating going home. I thought about making detours and hoping I would get lost and have to back out! Finally we reached Avori’s boyfriends place where they were inside making us a home made dinner. I walked in the house and instantly fell for him. There was an instant connection and we both kept wondering if we had met each other before. It just felt so natural, like we had known each other for years. The night went really well. I left feeling like maybe love at first sight really did exist, as corny as that sounds! He called me the next day and asked if I wanted to go watch fire works with him that night. He came and picked me up, met my parents and was asked by my mom to come back the next day for lunch as she was planning on having some close friends over. He didn’t want to be rude so he said yes, even though we hadn’t even known each other 24 hours!! He arrived to my parent’s house the next day to find my WHOLE family there. I mean everybody! Every aunt, uncle, cousin, second cousin that I had! I felt so bad for him, but we ended up having a lot of fun! Alex ended up going to prom with me and from that day forward we spent the next 3 and a half years inseparably connected at the hip!

Alex is the most amazing person I have ever met. He is a very hard working, supportive, romantic and really everything a girl could ask for. He is everything that I have always looked for in a guy. He is a very go with the flow kind of guy, which is the complete opposite of me so we compliment each other very well. We are both HUGE animal lovers and treat our puppy like our child (he is going to be our ring bearer...ridiculous, I know.) Alex and I have so much fun together, whether it’s having speed walking races through the Wal-Mart parking lot to see who can get to the car first, having a snow ball fights, or making him give me a piggy back ride and then him insisting that he have a turn as well. The fun things we do with each other are endless. I feel like when were together all we do is laugh. Even though I am only 21 and Alex, 25, we have talked about our big day for so many years and on December 18^th 2011 Alex insisted we take our new puppy for a walk to see the Ingersoll lights festival. It was a Sunday night and it was pretty late, but he insisted we go down to see the lights. Surrounded by flashing lights, Christmas music and lots of people, Alex got down on one knee, with our puppy sitting beside him, and asked me to marry him. I couldn’t believe it, I thought he was joking! I was so caught off guard I forgot to say yes, I just put the ring on my finger and hugged him! We got back to his parents house where they were waiting with Champaign and gifts! Getting engaged right before Christmas was great because we would get to share the surprise all our friends and family in person. My friends all said, “We knew you would be the first to get married, you guys are just so perfect” As greedy and conceded as it sounds, I love being told how lucky I am to have such an amazing guy. That never gets old. I never thought that a Blind date would end up this way. I always wonder why, out of all the guys my friend Avori briefly explained to me that day in high school, why this one guy stood out to me. But he did, and here we are, almost 4 years later, so crazily in love and so eager to start our new lives together.

There is something to be said for tradition. Something old, something new ...you know the rest, but there are times when I like to break the rules." GASP Kelly, what are we talking about here?" Well, blog world, what I am talking about is a 'first look'. This is when a couple decides to see each other before the ceremony and get all the photos done in advance. "But Kelly, it's simply not done." Well, actually, yes it is, and with more and more couples these days. The time line of a wedding day can be very tight and limiting, but when you do a first look you basically can set your own itinerary and go to any location(s) you like.

"We decided to change things up on our wedding day and take our wedding party photos before the ceremony so that we could get married and get to the party portion of the evening more quickly! As part of this change in format, it meant we were able to have a "first look" to capture a very special moment. It was very personal and romantic and we now have those pictures to forever show the look on our faces as we saw one another for the first time. We had butterflies in our stomach as we neared one another and felt all the magic of the moment. We are so happy with the way the day flowed and most importantly to have this time forever caught on camera."

MORE TIME FOR YOU- one of the nice things about getting your photos done before hand, is there is simply more time to enjoy the day together, just connect and have fun with it. After the ceremony you are apart of your cocktail hour and can actually enjoy your pre-party.
YOU ARE FRESH- there is nothing more difficult for a bride and groom than trying to pretend they are not tired after going full steam all day long. After getting up early, hair and make-up, getting ready, pictures with your girls, lunch, more pictures, ceremony, family and wedding party shots( I'm exhausted just writing this) you are pretty much done! It's nice because with a first look your energy is high and your make-up is fresh, and this is nice for your most important shots of the day, the couple shots.
EMOTIONAL CONNECTION- with the traditional reveal, walking down the aisle and seeing one another then, you see each other and then you can't really connect or chat. It's right into the business end of the wedding day ceremony. With the first look couples can see each other and really connect and take time to drink each other in. I generally shoot you seeing each other, then give you some privacy. You can do your first look privately with just me or shared with family and friends.
GUESTS WAIT LESS- we've all been to those weddings where the ceremony is at 1pm and the reception is at 5:30pm and you are in from out of town but not staying at a hotel.......sooooo what do you do now?? I had a bride tell me her and her boyfriend went to a wedding like this and they went into their car and slept. I bet they felt fresh for the reception. If you get your photos done before the ceremony, you can book a later ceremony time and basically walk into your reception with your guests, stress free.

'But Kelly, that all sounds really smart and logical, but I still want to see my groom/bride for the first time at the ceremony!' And I say that's awesome, I say it has to work for you. The 'first look' is not for everyone, but not everyone knows it is available. I just want to give my couples more options and help them plan their special day :)

“My husband & I decided to take the majority of our wedding photos prior to the ceremony as we have been guests at many weddings and were never a fan of the 2-4 hour delay between ceremony & reception. My absolute favourite part about doing this was The First Look. We saw each other for the first time on our wedding day just the two of us (and Kelly!). It was intimate, emotional and just for us two. On a day where you’re committing yourselves to each other it’s nice to have a moment just for the two of you and better yet capture it on film. I wouldn’t have done it any other way.”

LOVE IS ART was founded by South African-born Jeremy Brown. As an abstract artist, Brown has been making paintings during intimacy for over a decade, inspired by the 1960's French artist Yves Klein and various performance art pieces by Andy Warhol. One day, a close friend complimented him on a painting that was hung inside his house. After discovering how the painting was made, she asked him to provide her with everything she needed to make a painting with her husband on their anniversary. Jeremy put together a small package with all of the materials needed and wrote a little directional note for them to follow. They absolutely loved it, and the idea was born. Jeremy then spent 6 months researching and developing materials to ensure a safe project, including a treated non-allergenic cotton canvas, as well as, a specially-fomulated non-toxic, washable paint. He packaged the kit under the name Love Is Art. According to Brown, "Art takes patience, dedication, practice, creativity, open mind, and an open heart...so does love. Love is art."

Simply put, LOVE IS ART is a kit that comes with everything a couple needs to safely make a tangible piece of abstract expressionistic art while being intimate with each other. What is left is a one-of-a-kind abstract painting that represents that special moment, that can then be stretched, framed and hung on the wall -- a reminder of the love that was shared. The kit also provides a unique bonding experience for the couples involved, as they work together as a team to craft their own unique masterpeice.

There are so many moments in my life where I just pause and say...'freeze, stop and feel how amazing this is.' It's part of why I am so passionate about photography, especially photographing people and special moments in their life. I feel like a historian, land marking peoples lives.

As this year comes to a close, and another new year begins, full of life, love, possibility and sometimes sorrow, I say thank you to everyone for letting me be apart of your incredible journey. My family, friends and all those amazing people who allow me to peek into the most intimate parts of their lives and make me feel like I'm home while I capture their story.

Have a safe, happy new years and here is a bit of history from 2011.

I have received many letters. So many beautiful, warm, heartfelt letters from a lot of kind, giving, inspirational people. It was ridiculously hard to pick just one, but I did and it was this letter that made
me pick the Connolley family:

I’m not sure where to begin with my explanation of the family I believe deserves this beautiful gift.

The Connolly family has been an integral part of my life since before I was born. Heather (whom I affectionately refer to at Mom#2) has been best friends with my Mom for over 25 years. Together with her husband Tim, Heather had two beautiful children Sarah and Shauna who I played with as a child, and would grow to call each two of my very best friends. The Connolly household was always one of fun and fanfare; with a beautiful back yard and a keen knack for entertaining, summer and wintertime get togethers alike were always spent at the Connolly’s. And I’m not just talking my family, The Connolly’s opened their home to anyone of their girls friends; I’m sure Sarah and Shauna’s friends shared more secrets and tears with Heather and Tim than they did to their own families!! The Connolly’s house felt like home to anyone who stepped foot in the front door. What's more is that their continued love and acceptance of all was never at a cost to the close relationships and bonds fostered between each of them in the immediate family; from a skinned knee to a broken heart, The Connolly family came together to support each other, and somehow lift the pain away.

Less than 12 months ago, Tim was diagnosed with Cancer. At first it appeared as a small shadow on his Liver which they immediately identified as a tumor, then to all of our relief, the doctors remitted their diagnosis and claimed the shadow to be mere blood vessels; however this relief did not last long, it was shortly thereafter that the Doctors realized their mistake, and the Chemo Therapy began.

To anyone that has had a loved one battle cancer, and seen the results of how Chemo Therapy truly assaults your body…you can only imagine how this affected their lives. But in true Connolly fashion, the family turned inwards, and supported each other and Tim on every step of this journey.

As of today, the tumor has shrunk enough and Tim will soon be added to the Liver Transplant list. All positive things, but still not a cure.

The hard reality of this situation is that Tim doesn’t have an unlimited amount of time to watch his new Grandson (Evan Timothy born October 2011) grow. And his loving and amazing family do not have an unlimited amount of time to spend with Tim. This is why today I am submitting The Connolly family as candidates for your amazing gift. I have experienced firsthand the beauty that is your photography; I have experienced the fun involved spending a few hours with you capturing still beauty. I want them to have not only the gift of these beautiful photographs that can be looked back on for years to come; but also the gift of the memories that will be created in their minds spending a day of smiles, with you on the other side of a lens.

I wish you and your family the happiest of holidays!!

I love living in a small town. Everything is 5 minutes away. I have decided that I would like to highlight some local talent and from time to time and do a post about them on the blog. The first place that came to mind was Dwell owned by Lisa Dube. Dwell is this fabulous addition to Ingersoll that offers an eclectic blend of interior decor wares, entertaining must haves and a few funky finds. Along with the store, Lisa offers design consultation and much more. Here's a little bit about her:

Stuff you should probably know:

I am a woman who is inspired by design, how it feels, how it surrounds me the mood it reveals. I definitely have a few pair of rose coloured glasses that help me to transform my surroundings into a place that expresses who I am fully and completely.

Inspiration comes from nature and mixing the old with the new, if you were to ask me my style I would laugh and say…cozy-eclectic…..is that really a style? If it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside I will buy it!

I am a self professed tree hugger, and try to keep our planet in mind in all that I do, that includes decorating with salvaged, reused materials. I believe it is our moral and ethical responsibility to give back to our earth ,to respect it and to take care of one another.

I love to change it up and keep things fresh, for those of you who know me no two trips to my home look the same as my pieces are always moving from room to room depending on my mood that day.

I am not a graduate of a fancy design school, I was blessed with a creative soul, a fresh mind and a restless spirit that wants to decorate the world beautiful!

Well, it took about 5 times, but we FINALLY got this shoot done. It was a month of Rebecca and I texting back and forth, monitoring the radar and me leaving to meet them in the sun and getting there in the rain. We did it, and we had an adventure. It was like a scene out of a National Geographic. We saw horses and deer, but the thing that sticks with me was what happened at the Woodstock drive-in. We stopped there on our way into Ingersoll. I got them on top of this cool, beat up old car and started shooting. All of a sudden we hear 'mew, mew'. Out from under the car came a kitten. Then we heard more 'mewing' and turns out there was a whole litter of kittens under the car. I almost had them convinced to take one home until we heard the others. So, if any one is looking for a kitten, you know where to look. Thanks to you both for a fun morning that we all never thought would happen!!

The night began at their house. After Jen left, Courtney walked into the bedroom and saw the first envelope. Inside was a letter that instructed her to go the restaurant where they had their first date. There, she was handed a martini and an envelope from the bartender. The letter told her to head to the place where they'd had their second date. When she walked into the bar, she was given a drink and an appetizer and another envelope. She headed to the third destination where she received a final envelope telling her to simple go home! When Courtney walked in, she looked for Jen and finally found her back in the bedroom where she started. The entire wall was covered with post-it notes. Each post-it had a reason why Jen loved her. It was there that Jen asked Courtney to be with her forever. The final surprise of the evening was when Jen took Courtney to her moms house where all their family and friends where waiting to congratulate the happy couple with hugs, tears and so much love.
Jen and Courtney, I had such a blast with you both during your engagement shoot! I love your love! I can't wait until your wedding next summer!!

The Elm Hurst Inn is definitely one of my favourite venues, and when I showed up there for Julie and Drew's wedding a few weeks ago, they quickly became one of my favourite couples. Julie was so relaxed and laughing with her amazing mom. Her make-up and hair stunning and ready to marry the love of her life. Drew kept us all laughing through the very hot day that seemed to never drain their energy. Thanks to you both for letting me into your lives and being a part of your wonderful day.

Norfolk Bridal Show in Delhi

The Bridal Lounge will be at the Norfolk Bridal Show this year. I love doing these shows because it's such a great opportunity to actually meet people one on one, in person. The computer is great but I love talking with couples in real life! Anyone getting married, or not, please come down and say hi! family photo blitz day

Well if you can believe it, it's that time of year again. The nights are getting cooler, and I actually saw a tree turning colour last week. Don't shoot the messenger. I will be offering a photo blitz day again this year. It will be Sunday, October 30th and the location will be determined closer to the date, because I like to see how the leaves roll. Here is the 411:

$80 includes:
20 minute session with 4-6 people
10-20 high resolution digital negatives in colour and black and white on a disc.
These are fully edited and yours to keep.

kristy and ben- grand bend wedding

I love Kristy and Ben. They are fun, easy going, cool and very much in love with each other. Not the 'gotta be all over each other to show everyone we love each other' love. They are best friends and when they are together there is just this amazing chemistry, and I had the honour of capturing it. The wedding was at Kristy's family house near Grand Bend and I absolutely enjoyed all of their family and friends. It was a VERY hot day and the decision was made early that the guys would ditch the coats for good. No complaints from anyone, just a whole lot of laughter and love. Congratulations again to you both!

Calgary Stampede and the Kananaski mountains

Howdy y'all! We just got back from one of the most incredible trips ever. I decided not to take my camera because I was afraid of anything happening to it while doing all the events planned. I regretted it immediately. We did rodeo, horseback riding in the Kananaski mountains, flyfishing and even had a brush with royalty. I ran into Steven Harper at a Starbucks around the corner from our hotel. Thanks to The Lone Star Texas Grill ( best fajitas EVER!!) I came home a little bit cowgirl! These are a few I took off my iphone, sorry for the crappy quality.

We waited at the parade hoping to get a glimps of William and Kate as they were opening the Stampede parade. We laughed so hard when they went flying by us at 50 km in a secured car. Oh well, she waved, and I am certain it was to me :)

The crazy cowboys at the rodeo. These guys are tough and brave and it literally took my breath away everytime one of those gates flew open.

Everyone must put horseback riding in the mountains on their bucket list. It was spiritual!

About to attempt fly fishing for the first time. I was really, really bad at it but it was fun. We didn't catch anything but an amazing view and a few rays!

They spent the early morning laughing, grooming and getting ready for one of the biggest days of their life! Danielle and John were married a few weeks ago on a gorgeous Sunday morning at The Old Court House in London Ontario. They followed the ceremony with a glorious brunch full of love, style and friendship. Thank you so much for welcoming us into your world to be apart of capturing your precious memories. We've all been touched by cancer. Every single one of us! The relay for life was here in Ingersoll on Friday, and even though I had 2 weddings this weekend and couldn't go in it this year, I went down to show the girls what it was all about. My amazing friend Laurie and my brave, little friend Ava donated their hair for the cause. Here's a few from the evening!

Last week at the girls school they had a 'day of caring'. I received an e-mail from Principal Luce asking me to follow the kids around and shoot the various activities as they happened throughout the day. The kids did everything! They made breakfast for volunteers, wrote letters to soldiers, made get well cards for patients in hospital, played games with elderly residents of a local nursing home and the list goes on and on. I was extremely moved by the entire day. I saw with my eyes the kids being exposed to different generations, careers, quality of life and appreciation. The highlight of the day was watching the entire school start the day with a yoga class with Sabra from the Yoga Shack in London. After all, it is just as important to care for yourself as is for each other. Namaste.

Elizabeth and Paul are getting married. Elizabeth and Paul are building a house. Paul and his families company are building that house, so we thought it would be fun to take a few shots in the framing, whilst in transition. Elizabeth is a teacher, which is why I am writing this post like a 'Dick & Jane' book. We had a great afternoon together and I am looking forward to their wedding in fall 2012!
