valentines engagement session winner
Here is the letter I chose to win the engagement session. Thanks to everyone who sent in their stories of love and romance for me to read. It was very tough to choose, but there was something so sure, definite and lovely about this letter. Ashley, I love how you write, and I look forward to the chance to capture some of what you and Alex have in our session together.
Happy Valentines Day!!
Just a normal day for me, sitting in the cafeteria at high school, I sat dateless for prom, contemplating weather to even go or not. One of my best friends, Avori started suggesting some of her boyfriend’s friends. Listening to her explain each of the guys to me, I sat thinking how pathetic it was. I listened to her briefly explain one of the guys named Alex. From the very few details she gave me, he sounded really interesting. Before I knew it I was set to meet him on a blind date that weekend. To make the situation less awkward Avori suggested her and her boyfriend come along as a double date. I was so nervous; I pulled over 3 times on the way there, contemplating going home. I thought about making detours and hoping I would get lost and have to back out! Finally we reached Avori’s boyfriends place where they were inside making us a home made dinner. I walked in the house and instantly fell for him. There was an instant connection and we both kept wondering if we had met each other before. It just felt so natural, like we had known each other for years. The night went really well. I left feeling like maybe love at first sight really did exist, as corny as that sounds! He called me the next day and asked if I wanted to go watch fire works with him that night. He came and picked me up, met my parents and was asked by my mom to come back the next day for lunch as she was planning on having some close friends over. He didn’t want to be rude so he said yes, even though we hadn’t even known each other 24 hours!! He arrived to my parent’s house the next day to find my WHOLE family there. I mean everybody! Every aunt, uncle, cousin, second cousin that I had! I felt so bad for him, but we ended up having a lot of fun! Alex ended up going to prom with me and from that day forward we spent the next 3 and a half years inseparably connected at the hip!

Alex is the most amazing person I have ever met. He is a very hard working, supportive, romantic and really everything a girl could ask for. He is everything that I have always looked for in a guy. He is a very go with the flow kind of guy, which is the complete opposite of me so we compliment each other very well. We are both HUGE animal lovers and treat our puppy like our child (he is going to be our ring bearer...ridiculous, I know.) Alex and I have so much fun together, whether it’s having speed walking races through the Wal-Mart parking lot to see who can get to the car first, having a snow ball fights, or making him give me a piggy back ride and then him insisting that he have a turn as well. The fun things we do with each other are endless. I feel like when were together all we do is laugh. Even though I am only 21 and Alex, 25, we have talked about our big day for so many years and on December 18th 2011 Alex insisted we take our new puppy for a walk to see the Ingersoll lights festival. It was a Sunday night and it was pretty late, but he insisted we go down to see the lights. Surrounded by flashing lights, Christmas music and lots of people, Alex got down on one knee, with our puppy sitting beside him, and asked me to marry him. I couldn’t believe it, I thought he was joking! I was so caught off guard I forgot to say yes, I just put the ring on my finger and hugged him! We got back to his parents house where they were waiting with Champaign and gifts! Getting engaged right before Christmas was great because we would get to share the surprise all our friends and family in person. My friends all said, “We knew you would be the first to get married, you guys are just so perfect” As greedy and conceded as it sounds, I love being told how lucky I am to have such an amazing guy. That never gets old. I never thought that a Blind date would end up this way. I always wonder why, out of all the guys my friend Avori briefly explained to me that day in high school, why this one guy stood out to me. But he did, and here we are, almost 4 years later, so crazily in love and so eager to start our new lives together.

first look
There is something to be said for tradition. Something old, something new ...you know the rest, but there are times when I like to break the rules." GASP Kelly, what are we talking about here?" Well, blog world, what I am talking about is a 'first look'. This is when a couple decides to see each other before the ceremony and get all the photos done in advance. "But Kelly, it's simply not done." Well, actually, yes it is, and with more and more couples these days. The time line of a wedding day can be very tight and limiting, but when you do a first look you basically can set your own itinerary and go to any location(s) you like.
MORE TIME FOR YOU- one of the nice things about getting your photos done before hand, is there is simply more time to enjoy the day together, just connect and have fun with it. After the ceremony you are apart of your cocktail hour and can actually enjoy your pre-party.
YOU ARE FRESH- there is nothing more difficult for a bride and groom than trying to pretend they are not tired after going full steam all day long. After getting up early, hair and make-up, getting ready, pictures with your girls, lunch, more pictures, ceremony, family and wedding party shots( I'm exhausted just writing this) you are pretty much done! It's nice because with a first look your energy is high and your make-up is fresh, and this is nice for your most important shots of the day, the couple shots.
EMOTIONAL CONNECTION- with the traditional reveal, walking down the aisle and seeing one another then, you see each other and then you can't really connect or chat. It's right into the business end of the wedding day ceremony. With the first look couples can see each other and really connect and take time to drink each other in. I generally shoot you seeing each other, then give you some privacy. You can do your first look privately with just me or shared with family and friends.
GUESTS WAIT LESS- we've all been to those weddings where the ceremony is at 1pm and the reception is at 5:30pm and you are in from out of town but not staying at a hotel.......sooooo what do you do now?? I had a bride tell me her and her boyfriend went to a wedding like this and they went into their car and slept. I bet they felt fresh for the reception. If you get your photos done before the ceremony, you can book a later ceremony time and basically walk into your reception with your guests, stress free.
'But Kelly, that all sounds really smart and logical, but I still want to see my groom/bride for the first time at the ceremony!' And I say that's awesome, I say it has to work for you. The 'first look' is not for everyone, but not everyone knows it is available. I just want to give my couples more options and help them plan their special day :)
"We decided to change things up on our wedding day and take our wedding party photos before the ceremony so that we could get married and get to the party portion of the evening more quickly! As part of this change in format, it meant we were able to have a "first look" to capture a very special moment. It was very personal and romantic and we now have those pictures to forever show the look on our faces as we saw one another for the first time. We had butterflies in our stomach as we neared one another and felt all the magic of the moment. We are so happy with the way the day flowed and most importantly to have this time forever caught on camera."

“My husband & I decided to take the majority of our wedding photos prior to the ceremony as we have been guests at many weddings and were never a fan of the 2-4 hour delay between ceremony & reception. My absolute favourite part about doing this was The First Look. We saw each other for the first time on our wedding day just the two of us (and Kelly!). It was intimate, emotional and just for us two. On a day where you’re committing yourselves to each other it’s nice to have a moment just for the two of you and better yet capture it on film. I wouldn’t have done it any other way.”

love is art
...something different for you and your valentine....
LOVE IS ART was founded by South African-born Jeremy Brown. As an abstract artist, Brown has been making paintings during intimacy for over a decade, inspired by the 1960's French artist Yves Klein and various performance art pieces by Andy Warhol. One day, a close friend complimented him on a painting that was hung inside his house. After discovering how the painting was made, she asked him to provide her with everything she needed to make a painting with her husband on their anniversary. Jeremy put together a small package with all of the materials needed and wrote a little directional note for them to follow. They absolutely loved it, and the idea was born. Jeremy then spent 6 months researching and developing materials to ensure a safe project, including a treated non-allergenic cotton canvas, as well as, a specially-fomulated non-toxic, washable paint. He packaged the kit under the name Love Is Art. According to Brown, "Art takes patience, dedication, practice, creativity, open mind, and an open heart...so does love. Love is art."
Simply put, LOVE IS ART is a kit that comes with everything a couple needs to safely make a tangible piece of abstract expressionistic art while being intimate with each other. What is left is a one-of-a-kind abstract painting that represents that special moment, that can then be stretched, framed and hung on the wall -- a reminder of the love that was shared. The kit also provides a unique bonding experience for the couples involved, as they work together as a team to craft their own unique masterpeice.

winter family photo blitz
There are lots of spots still open for the winter photo blitz. Not only is it fun family time, couple time, doggie time, or whatever you want that time to be, but you make memories you will have forever. The session includes 10-20 edited digital negatives in colour and in b&w on a DVD for you to keep.
